Sunday Morning Adult Education Classes
Fall 2017 Schedule
Please join us even if you have been unable to attend a previous class in a series.
Our final installment of the “Uppity Women of the Bible” series begins Sunday, November 5 at 11 am in the parlor. The focus of these sessions will be on the book of Judith, a fascinating examination of an Uppity Woman who took things into her own hands (including the head of a brutal warrior chief). The story of Judith, a book from the Koine Greek version of the Hebrew Old Testament, reads like a historical novel rife with warfare, lust, espionage and intrigue. Posing provocative questions along the way, this final installment in the series will take participants from a mythological battlefield and a besieged city into the studio and psyche of the Baroque painter Artemisia Gentileschi. Our video guide to Judith is Dr. Lisa Wolfe, a self-described Bible Nerd, an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ, Professor of Hebrew Bible at Oklahoma City University, and the author of Ruth, Esther, Song of Songs, and Judith (Wipf and Stock, 2011). Dr. Wolfe’s style is a delightful balance of careful scholarship and a genuine love for the story of this amazing woman. You’re invited to join us for lively, thoughtful discussion that sheds light on timeless and contemporary issues.
Adult Education is expanding its outreach and offerings once again! The committee has been discussing and working on a series of special weeknight adult education events open to the community on topics of concern that were identified during our congregational self-study. On November 6, we will be offering a program with guest speakers Dr. David Schlager and Dr. Richard Rosenthal on the opioid crisis facing the youth and young adults in our communities. This is an evening forum for adults – parents, family members and concerned others. The program will run from 7:30 – 9:00 pm. Please plan on joining us for this timely topic, and bring a neighbor!
